Shona Sculptures
Spirals of Stone Mar 27 – Apr 30, 2025 New York One of the most well-known art movements of Africa, the Shona sculptors, have been carving their native stone for three generations. Showcasing sculptures in springstone black, artist Peter Gwisa knowingly crafts mobius spirals without the assistance of computers, solely using hand tools. A myriad of second and third generation sculptors will exhibit new works and curator Braden Coolidge will be on hand to explain their latest techniques. Serpentine, cobalt, leopard stone, and dolomite, all indigenous to Zimbabwe, are used to provide an entire spectrum of colorful rock, initially quarried, then carefully carved, sanded, then finally polished to provide these meaningfully tactile sculptures.
