David Michael Slonim: The Quickening

Overview

“Quickening” typically describes the gradual process of how an inanimate object becomes lifelike.  Modernist painter David Michael Slonim’s latest works display anthropomorphic abstracts that upon viewing, take on human features.  In the spirit of such noted artists as Picasso, Miro, and Guston, these works spring to life as his objects appear to become eyes and ears.  Slonim juxtaposes sophisticated colors with rich textures mingled with shapes and figures to create lighthearted images.  He not only injects humor into his paintings, but creatively confronts the current contradictions that face humanity on a daily basis: vanity and vulnerability, pathos and playfulness, anxiety and joy.
