Overview

For over three generations, Shona artists from Zimbabwe have been carving their way into one of the most well-known art movements from Africa.  Known for their native style, their classic natural stone, quarried to release their instinctive forms, these artists are recognized worldwide as among the finest craftsmen in stone

From hundreds of thousands of sculptures, this collection has been carefully curated to include only the finest and most distinctive artists of this genre.  Perfectly balanced, these carvings, done with only hand tools, are highly polished objects with intriguing lines, shapes, and textures.  From abstract forms to timeless figures, Shona artists reflect the very best of the current sculpture movement. Come and enjoy each of these new creations, carefully showcased in our “new space,” just across Fifth Avenue from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the heart of New York’s vibrant museum mile, only steps from our original location. The gallery invites visitors to take this opportunity to attend this exceptional exhibition, talk to our curator about this process, and witness this art form, which transcends cultures and brings new meaning to life.
