Shona Sculptures: Enduring Elegance
Stone forms in the earth for millions of years, until our gifted Shona artists quarry it from the mines of Zimbabwe to create sculptures of enduring elegance. Some carve figurative works, symbolizing the experiences of life, others craft abstractions which delight the eye. Sparkling dolomite, which looks like crystal, is but one of the colorful, natural stones native to this African country. Perhaps one of the most well-known art movements from Africa, these Shona sculptors craft beauty that they believe inherently exists in the stone. An art form that has spanned three generations, these sculptures are not only stunningly beautiful to behold, but they continue a tradition of humanity that links us all together. This latest collection showcases both traditional figures and contemporary visions of this talented generation of artists who keep their native stories and traditions alive.
