Gary Ernest Smith: Land, Labor, Light

Overview

Artists find inspiration in unexpected places. For Gary Ernest Smith, whose six-decade career has been deeply rooted in the landscapes and people of the American West, the inspiration for his latest body of work began on the road to his previous exhibition.

Driving from Utah to Scottsdale for his previous exhibition, Smith and his wife traveled through Lake Powell and the small town of Price, Utah, entering the dramatic red-rock country just as twilight descended.

The landscape offered Smith a striking interplay of color and light: red rock illuminated against deep purple shadows, mesas beneath a rising moon, and a sky shifting through brilliant yellows, blues, and pinks. Yet it was not simply the spectacle of the landscape that captured his attention.
